The Owner Is the Bottleneck and Nobody Wants to Say It
The Owner Is the Bottleneck and Nobody Wants to Say It
business systems Minnesota
There is a stage in a business where being needed feels like proof that it is working. People come to you. Decisions wait for you. Nothing important happens without you in the room.
Then it stops feeling like proof and starts feeling like a trap.
How to tell
You do not need a diagnostic for this. Answer one question honestly. If you left for seven days with your phone off, what breaks?
If the answer is nothing, you have a business.
If the answer is a list, you have a job that happens to have employees.
Why it happens to good owners
It is usually not ego. It is speed. Early on, deciding it yourself was faster than explaining it, and it was. That habit kept working right up until the volume got past what one person can hold.
The second reason is harder. Nobody wrote down what good looks like. Your team cannot make the call without you because the standard only exists in your head, and they are guessing at it.
What actually changes it
Not hiring. A new person joining an unclear structure just gives you one more person to answer questions for.
Start with a list of every decision that came to you last week. Sort it into three piles. Decisions that are genuinely yours, because they involve money, risk, or direction. Decisions somebody else could make if the standard were written. Decisions nobody should have to make twice. That third pile is the one to attack first. Those are not decisions, they are missing rules.
The uncomfortable part
Once the standard is written, you have to hold it on the day you do not feel like holding it. That is the whole test. A standard you enforce when you are in a good mood and let slide when you are tired is not a standard, and your team already knows which one you are running.
